Full day’s riding programThe Peruvian Paso is today known worldwide as the ultimate horse breed for luxury riding. Thanks to its unique innate four-beat lateral gait, the Peruvian Paso is undoubtedly the smoothest travel horse in the world. Classic Peruvian Equitation is the traditional Peruvian riding style that originates from the principles of classical horsemanship, as defined and practiced by the Spanish Riding School. The Spanish Riding School has of course provided the basis of what is today known as Classical Dressage. At the beginning of the 16th century the Spanish settlers arrived in Peru and introduced these same principles of classical horsemanship and during the following centuries the Classic Peruvian Equitation which we know today has evolved. This one–day program will give you an excellent opportunity to discover the world of the Peruvian Paso horse, of Peruvian equitation and of our rich equestrian traditions. During the first part of the day you will learn how to ride our horses during a short riding course offered by the owner of Perol Chico. After a delicious lunch at the Hacienda Huayoccari you will then enjoy a wonderful half-day trail ride through the Sacred Valley on delightful purebred Peruvian Paso horses. ITINERARY
After a welcome drink at the ranch we will start the day with a short seminar to provide you with some background information on our breed, our riding style and our equestrian traditions. The Peruvian Paso horse is without doubt a wholly unique breed and the Classic Peruvian Equitation is in many ways different to the English or Western style of riding. This introduction will give you a better insight into the history of our breed and the importance of preserving our National horse as a travel horse. We will also discuss other important issues such as body position, aids, collection, impulsion, handling of the reins and on how to communicate with your horse. The introduction is followed by a fantastic display of the Classic Peruvian Equitation by the owner of Perol Chico and his Peruvian ‘chalan’ (horse trainer). They will demonstrate the traditional Peruvian ‘enfrenadura’ (training in the bit) and the proper execution of the four-beat lateral gait, the ‘Paso Llano’. After the demonstration you will have the opportunity to have a go yourself and you will be forgiven for feeling a little nervous prior to mounting these magnificent and spirited animals. Don’t feel uncomfortable if you don’t get it right immediately, we are there to correct and to help you and our horses are very forgiving.
We will have lunch at the Hacienda Huayoccari. The most noticeable aspect of the hacienda is its sensational setting, dominating the Urubamba valley in the midst of the highland crags and vegetation through which the river flows. The Hacienda Huayoccari is a typical Andean colonial hacienda that is owned by the Orihuela-Lambarri family who has lived here for over three centuries. After a tour of the property and a detailed explanation of the family’s impressive pre-Columbian and colonial art collection, guests will be treated to a typical Andean lunch, which is prepared with the hacienda’s own fresh produce. 13:30 - 16:00 pm: trail ride through the Sacred Valley with the Peruvian Paso horses of the Hacienda Huayoccari. You will enjoy a wonderful ride through the countryside of the Sacred Valley visiting picturesque villages such as Urquillos and Huycho. The Peruvian Paso horses at the Hacienda Huayocarri are well taken care of and are suitable for beginners and more experienced riders. There are no difficult climbs or obstacles to be taken so you can relax and enjoy a smooth ride on nice trails through colourful landscapes and breathtaking sceneries. You will be enjoy the ride even more as you are well prepared to ride these magnificent horses and will know how to get the best out of them. Trip detailsHORSES AND TACKThe horses are locally bred Peruvian Pasos. This breed dates back to the colonial era of Peru and originates from the Spanish Andalusians. A symbol of their historic and noble past, Peruvian Paso horses are bred for their grace, spirit, and intelligence. These horses like to amble, moving fore and hind limbs on the same side at the same time, unlike other equine races that typically move diagonal limbs at the same time. During the ride you will experience traveling on horseback at the paso llano gait. The horses are well cared for, strong, and even-tempered. The tack utilized is very traditional and demonstrates refined Peruvian craftsmanship. The hardwood hex stirrup and the guarnición, or tailpiece, are unique elements of the Peruvian tack. The saddle is a box saddle and has a deep seat. RESPONSIBILITIESWe strive to take the utmost care of our guests, but we assume no responsibility for personal injury, loss or damage in any way.
